I grew up in Juda, Wisconsin with my two sisters Danielle and Tracy and my parents Carol and Gary. My parents were avid volunteer firefighters so you could say I grew up in the fire station. The 'station' was where I learned my strong values for public service. From a young age I was very insterested in drawing, painting and crafts. When I was in 2nd grade I had won a state art competition for my Native American sand painting. That painting was the catalyst for my future art career. I went through high school taking as many art classes as possible and any class that related to my chosen field. After high school I attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Once I graduated I was lucky to find an opening at Black Hawk which was a small town much like I grew up in. The following is my teaching philosophy:
Art Education Philosophy Statement By: Jessica Davis I believe every child, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, culture, or mental or physical disabilities, should have the opportunity to have quality education rich in art. Art Education is essential in education because it becomes a bridge between content areas, improves self-confidence and fosters high order thinking. With a quality art education, student’s gain 21st century skills which will make them a successful community member. My objectives as a teacher are to reach every student in my classroom, providing them with the skills to achieve their goals and prepare them for their future.
Wisconsin’s Art Education Standards provide a great foundation for a quality art education. These standards cover the learning and understanding of aesthetics in art, producing art, technology in art, learning about art-related careers, art in their community, and learning how art is involved in integrated studies. Art students should study a variety of cultures to better understand the world around them. Students should also learn how to think critically and critique their own art work and the artwork of others through group discussions, rubrics and reflective journaling. This critiquing will aid them in understanding different points of view and in turn have an open mind. Students should also be able to problem solve utilizing a variety of media, tools, techniques, and processes.
Students should be given opportunities to display their work inside and outside of their respective community. Involving students by working with a mural on a local wall, creating sculptures in a park, or holding a gallery opening at a local facility, shows students the values on how to become a stronger community member.
Inspiring students to create art is a powerful and rewarding experience. I truly enjoy teaching art and often find that my students also inspire me. I believe a quality education in art can help students understand the world around them and create a positive difference in every student’s life.
